Last Saturday, we rented a car for the week. On Sunday, we returned to the Opatija Riviera but this time kept going into Istria where we spent the afternoon. We came upon a carnival in a little town called Lovran, a few towns after Opatija, at just the right time. (I think that all of the little towns here have Mardi Gras carnivals.) It was hilarious. I suspect that J.D. and I were the only sober adults there. We enjoyed the loud music, loud singing and chanting (wish we'd known more of what people were saying!), orange smoke being released into the air, and people in cool, homemade costumes lining the streets (and no police around to block off traffic or do crowd control, as there would have been in the U.S.).
Carnival in Lovran
After our taste of Lovran's carnival, we kept wandering, going into Istria. The terrain was beautiful. We came upon this one tiny town called Plomin with structures dating back to the 13th century.
Eventually, on the way back to Rijeka, we went through this very long tunnel (around 3 miles) through the mountain that we look at from our balcony every day. When we got home, J.D. did a little internet searching and learned that this tunnel doesn't even make the top 20 in road tunnel lengths around the world, but evidently it is longer than any road tunnel in the U.S.
