I voted for Italy - catch a ferry to Venice before the spring tourists show up - but since you ask. How about Austria for "other"? A train ride from via Villach through the Alps to either Innsbruck or Salzburg ought to be pretty nice and not too long/expensive. Or you could go via Italy (Trento.)
